As parents, it is also our responsibility to teach our children the value of saving money and spending wisely. It is never too early to start. Let us encourage them to save coins in a piggy bank and teach them about basic money concepts. For older kids, you can bring them to the bank when opening a savings account for them so they’d feel involved. Signing them up for kiddie seminars would be a great idea, too.

Remember, developing good money habits as early as now is a skill they can carry through their adult life.

Being in a one-income household forced me to learn good money habits. Okay, I am not saying I’ve become an expert now, but I can honestly say that I’ve improved a lot in terms of managing our finances. Reading books and attending a few seminars on personal finance have helped me a lot. Had I learned about all these things when I was still working, I would’ve had significant amount of savings in the bank now. But then again, it’s never too late to start.

Allow me to share with you some tips that work for us:

• The Golden Rule in Personal Finance: Income – Savings = Expenses – This is non-negotiable. You must allocate at least 10% of your income every month. Treat it as a monthly expense that you have to let go no matter what. The good news is, it goes to your savings account. Not to a merchant.
• Have an Expense/Budget Tracker – This is a life-saver! Not only does it give you a visual representation of where the money goes, it also helps you plan your budget wisely. There are so many mobile apps and free Excel trackers that you can download online. In our case, though, we created our own Excel tracker from scratch and since it’s customized to our family’s needs, it works wonderfully.
• Increase Cash Flow – Being a stay-at-home mom has a lot of advantages. And one of them is….. (*drum roll, please*) ….. you can earn some moolah while taking care of your kids. Isn’t that cool?! There are so many legit online jobs out there (e.g: oDesk, eLance, OnlineJobs.ph, etc.) and you can earn money from blogging as well by doing product reviews and placing adverts on your site.
• Avoid Dining Out – Learn how to cook good food and serve it beautifully on the table so your family won’t feel deprived for not dining out. (Well, you can still eat out once in a while but make sure you don’t make it your lifestyle.)
• Invest in the Stock Market – While it’s good to have savings in the bank, it is NOT wise to put all your eggs in one basket. Meaning, “Don’t be silly. Don’t put all your money in the bank!” With our country’s booming economy, it baffles me that so many people are still letting ALL their money sleep in the bank where it eventually depreciates over time and gets beaten up by inflation. Build a retirement fund now by investing in giant companies through the stock market and watch your money grow in 5, 10, 20 years or more! (I have been happily investing for a year now and wish I had done this a long time ago.)

“You Are Your Child’s First and Best Teacher” is for parents of children ages 0 to 3. It’s perfect for first time parents who may not yet be confident in their parenting skills and who want to connect with other parents.  It aims to help parents support their children’s development by exploring the mindset of being the first and best teacher, discussing the basics of child development, and providing examples and ideas of appropriate activities for each developmental level. It would be a good venue to share experiences and connect with other parents.

About the Speaker:

She started The Learning Basket in 2011 to document the magical moments with her kids while homeschooling them in their preschool years. Encouraged by the response and inquiries from her blog readers, she opened an online bookshop in 2012 together with her longtime friend, Sanne Unson, and started giving free parent-education seminars to further her cause.

Being a homeschool advocate myself, I can’t stress enough the importance of being our child’s first teacher. We may not realize it at first, but aren’t we the one who taught them how to sing their ABCs and count from 1-10? How about the basic colors, shapes, animals, and parts of the body? Aren’t we the one who first introduced these things to our child/children? If this is you, then you are already doing a great job at homeschooling! So instead of enrolling them in expensive preschools, why not devote at least 1-2 hours of your time teaching your little one more and more each day?

One day, we were woken up by several loud thumps on the roof.  The mangoes fell off the tree! The kids and I went out to check the mangoes scattered all over the yard. We picked them up and oh boy, my then-two-year old daughter had so much fun counting all morning!

I know homeschooling is not for every family, but I strongly believe that it should be considered during our child’s formative years (age 0-5). After all, children learn best in an environment where they feel safe and loved. So where else can that be? It’s at the comfort of your own home — where learning happens naturally. A place where you can make every moment teachable.

Eiffel Tower, Paris

As a child, I have always been fascinated with the beauty of European countries such as France. Who wouldn’t wanna go to Paris and see the stunning Eiffel Tower one day? This dream is most probably in everyone’s bucket list. And oh, learning a little French would be great, too — which is said to be the sweetest language ever known to man. This is probably one of the reasons why Paris is considered as the most romantic cities in the world! No wonder, many couples choose to spend their honeymoon in this city.

We’ve already given away a lot of stuff over the years — curtains, bedsheets, old clothes, our very first TV, even old cellphones, baby strollers, cribs, walkers, baby clothes, shoes, 2 digital cameras, bags, etc.

But this year, I’d like to hold a garage sale for the first time. Yes, a garage sale!!! Why not, right?

I’d like to raise a little money for my home improvement projects this year.

Here are the items that I’m planning to sell:

1. Our old refrigerator (We already bought a new one last year)
2. Our Samsung 29-inch CRT flat screen TV (we’re buying a 42-inch LED TV two weeks from now,  using the money I saved as a freelance editor online.)
3. DVD player
4. Component
5. My kid’s unused stuff toys (Gosh, they have tons!!!)
6. My bags (slightly used and forgotten)
7. Clothes
8. Bed sheets
9. My kids’ bean bag chairs
10. My super old books (mostly romance novels)
11. Some of my kids’ toys (I will definitely keep the useful and educational ones)

I still have to look around the house for more items.  I plan to do it this summer so my son Greggy can also practice his basic arithmetic skills while selling goods.

What a bright idea! Hehe.
